History
According to ancient lore, Korea's earliest civilization, known as Kojoson, was founded in 2333 B.C. by king Tangun, father of the Korean nation. Then followed Koguryo (277 BC - 668 AD), the first feudal state that was the largest and strongest in the Orient. King Tongmyong (259-298 BC) was the founder of the Koguryo kingdom. Koryo (918-1392) was the first unified and the most powerful state in the history of Korea.
In the 17th century, Korea became a vassal state of China and was cut off from outside contact until the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895. Following Japan's victory, Korea was granted independence. By 1910, Korea had been annexed by Japan.
After Japan's surrender at the conclusion of World War II, the Korean peninsula was partitioned into two occupation zones, divided at the 38th parallel. The USSR controlled the north, with the U.S. taking charge of the south. In 1948, the division was made permanent with the establishment of the separate regimes of North and South Korea. The Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea (North Korea) was established on September 9th, 1948, with Kim Il Sung as president. Between North and South in 1950 broke out the Korean War (Fatherland Liberation War), which has stopped in 1953 by signing an armistice. It ended the war but failed to bring about a permanent peace. To date, the Republic of Korea (South) and Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea (North) have not signed a peace treaty.
DPRK is now the sovereign socialist state (by Constitution 1972) run on principles Juche Idea ideology developed by Kim Il Sung. "Juche" can be translated like "absolute self-sufficiency". According to Juche Idea all domestic questions have to be decided from self-reliance position, with only own forces support.
"...Juche means that the masters of the revolution and construction are the masses of the people and they are also the motive force of the revolution and construction. In other words, one is responsible for one's own destiny..."
From July 8th 1997 North Korea adopted new calendar - Juche with the beginning at 1912 (the year when Kim Il Sung was born) like the first year of Juche.
The ruling Party is the Workers' Party of Korea.The National Defense Commission has the highest state power.
After Great Leader's Kim Il Sung death in 1994 all state's power in fact was handed over to his son, Dear Leader Kim Jong Il. In 1998 Kim Il Sung was declared like North Korea's President for Eternity and Kim Jong Il has got the positions of Supreme Commander of the Korean Army, Chairman of the National Defense Commission and General Secretary of the Korean Workers' Party.
A little more about DPRK ..
There is a real socialist system in DPRK. Country is in economic and energetic crisis and political isolation in fact now. But in the time North Korea with population of 22 million (7 million labor force) has one of the most efficient army in the world. "Songun" or self-defense is the guiding direction of the domestic policy fueled by government material support. During 50 years after Korean War DPRK has become the impregnable fortress, which is not possible to seize by usual way.
At the same time North Korea has a fantastic nature. The gigantic Paekdu Mountain ranges, high peaks, vast areas of fields, virgin pine tree forests, waterfalls and the freshest air attract the visitors. Korea has been called a "Golden Tapestry" from old times. Ancient Buddhist temples and Korea Kings Mausoleums are in all tourist resorts.
